Bologna, Italy

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna Region, and due to its central location, the city is an urban node and major transport hub. The city strives to reconcile the mobility demands it faces with the limited capacity of its narrow streets in the medieval city centre. In 2019 Bologna launched its SUMP, which covers the whole metropolitan area.

LAB - safe & sustainable school district along the Knowledge Path

Location: Via Erbosa, Via Gobetti, Via Cristoforo da Bologna, via Manin - along the Via della Conoscenza, Quartiere Navile

The pilot will focus on the implementation of a safe and sustainable school district along the Knowledge Path (Via della Conoscenza) to encourage safer and autonomous home-school mobility. The  Knowledge Path is a bicycle and pedestrian path that will connect cultural, educational and civic hubs; a meaningful and recognizable route, dedicated to soft and smart mobility, that crosses the territory northwest of the historic center of the city, connecting with sustainable infrastructure, strategic districts under development and also new urban settlements, public spaces, green areas and schools.

The aim is to redesign the public space around the school in collaboration with the school, the students and local stakeholders. The interventions will include:

  • a wayfinding system
  • bike racks and a covered bike station
  • seating infrastructure
  • free drinking water distribution
  • equipment for emergency maintenance or a re-charge station for e-bikes
  • the development of customised safety auditing procedures to minimise the impact of green infrastructure on visibility and safety
