Tampere, Finland

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the home ground of innovation. Tampere is well advanced in its smart city developments. Tampere has developed the Carbon-neutral Tampere 2030 Roadmap (2022) and its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (2021). Furthermore, Tampere was recently awarded with the best SUMP, due to its focus on low-carbon mobility and empowering people to make healthier urban mobility choices.

LAB - AI for increased road safety, space reallocation & parametric design

Location: Vuores housing district & two unsafe intersections near schools

This pilot will demonstrate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for urban road safety & accident prevention, employing parametric design & space reallocation. It aims to evaluate the innovative uses of AI to protect citizens in urban traffic and engage people in co-creating safe environments.

The main actions envisaged will:

  • identify hazardous spots,
  • collect relevant data from city repositories,
  • analyse historical data,
  • install AI-cameras to target crossings, and
  • develop AI-algorithms to recognize pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooters, and cars and their interactions through the Tampere IoT-platform.

A follow-up is also foreseen involving citizen engagement and local road space reallocation to create safe environments near schools.
