Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina
General description
Sarajevo Canton is situated near the geographic centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering a picturesque landscape that showcases the country's diverse topography. The canton is home to several notable mountains, including Bjelašnica, Igman, Jahorina, Trebević, and Treskavica. The cities within the canton are predominantly built on the hillsides and valleys between these mountains.
At the heart of the region lies the Sarajevo Field, a small depression where the majority of the city is located. The Miljacka River meanders its way through the canton, adding to its natural beauty. One of the area’s most significant landmarks is Vrelo Bosne, the spring of the Bosna River, which provides water to most of Sarajevo’s residents.
Economically, Sarajevo is the strongest region in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city and canton together account for over 37% of the country's GDP, making it a key driver of the nation’s economic growth.
mobility goals
Sarajevo Canton’s vision is one "open to innovations in sustainable urban mobility, a place of safe and comfortable living, clean air and provides all its citizens with various mobility opportunities, accessible and affordable zero and low emission public transport and wide opportunities for intensive development of non-motorised movement."
To actualise this, together with local municipalities, the City of Sarajevo implemented important projects, including, reconstructing the pre-war cable car "Sarajevska žičara", which connects the old part of the city, with the nearby mountain of Trebević.
The sloping elevator in the municipality of Centar was upgraded, alongside e-scooters and bike-sharing bike services introduced through private initiatives.
Additionally, the city built 16 km of new bike paths and invested in an updated and modern public transport management system and electronic billing system, allowing for kilometres of new tram lines built, and connecting the suburb of Hrasnica, the trolleybus line to the suburb of Vogosca.
