Brașov, Romania

General description

Positioned in the heart of Romania, and surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, this city boasts a population of 237,000 (2022), with around 406,000 people in the metropolitan area. Known for its scenic beauty, it is home to Poiana Brașov, Romania's second-largest mountain resort.

As a key transport hub, particularly for rail travel, the city combines rich history with modern growth, offering a unique mix of medieval and communist-era architecture, alongside rapidly expanding suburbs.

The city is also proud to feature Romania's newest bus fleet, an extensive pedestrian zone in the historic centre, and an ambitious plan to develop the largest cycling network in the country, making it an ideal destination for both residents and visitors.

mobility goals

The city is actively modernising its public transport fleet, with an average fleet age of 5-6 years and 40% of vehicles being electric. The design process for the core cycling network is already underway, with 80 km set to be constructed over the next two years.

Key goals include reducing traffic on main roads by 25%, achieving a 40% active mobility modal split, and reaching Vision Zero—aiming to eliminate road fatalities (currently averaging 3 deaths per year).
