General description
Rhodes is a Greek island located in the southeastern Aegean, part of the Dodecanese, in the South Aegean region. With a growing population, Rhodes is the third most populous island in Greece.
Within the city limits of Rhodes lies the Medieval Town of Rhodes or “Old Town” as it is called by the locals. As one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world, it has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Enclosed within the walls, the Old Town contains remarkable architectural monuments from the Byzantine era, the Knighthood, the Turkish rule and the period of the Italian rule. mobility goals
Rhodes has taken notable steps to improving its city’s mobility, focusing on sustainable urban planning and better connectivity. Key developments include, construction of access routes to the airpot and port. The city is also working on a detailed plan for recording and classifying the island’s road network and developing the first Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans.
As part of ongoing efforts to increase accessibility, a study is being conducted. Additionally, to improve traffic flow, roundabouts are being introduced and new sidewalks and walkways are being constructed in the Old Town area.
The city also intends to create a cycle path network, to further proomote sustainable modes of transport.
